Where does diet food come from? You might think it is necessary to order all of your healthy meals from the companies that advertise their packaged healthy eating plans on TV. Or, if you follow fad diets, you might need to shop at a warehouse club so you can buy crates of grapefruits every week. The truth is, healthy diets start in a much more convenient place. You can find all the ingredients for eating right at your local grocery store.
One common ingredient: capsaicin. Capsaicin is better known as the fire that ignites in your mouth when you eat hot red peppers. This compound can also ignite your metabolism so that it burns more calories. One researcher, Dr. Toshio Moritani (PhD) of Japan's Kyoto University, says that the amount of capsaicin needed to achieve elevated calorie-burning can actually be consumed through healthy diets. To demonstrate how to eat healthy for weight loss with capsaicin, Moritani fed a curried rice meal to female study participants. This dish contained 3mg of capsaicin and raised calorie-burning rates by 10%. This effect was only measured for 30 minutes, but 24 hours of a 10% increase would burn an extra 129 calories a day. An assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen, Dr. Anita Belza, also has some expertise in this area. These two doctors agree that healthy meals made for healthy weight loss would have to include too much capsaicin for most people to handle. Adding 7 cups of coffee to daily diet plans would be effective, but it is impractical. The same is true for eating hot red peppers as a diet food all day. In fact, some studies that attempted to measure the high calorie-burning rates of capsaicin-rich diets saw participants drop out. A common result of the consumption of a large amount of peppers is an upset stomach. So is a sensitive palette. A great strategy to achieve healthy weight loss success is to incorporate all different kinds of diet food into healthy eating plans, taking advantage of the benefits of each ingredient. Capsaicin can be combined with caffeine, green tea, and cinnamon to provide a moderate and sensible increase in calories burned every day. The role of capsaicin is to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. This ingredient offers only the positive and healthy effects. Healthy diets involve exercising and eating right, and can be enhanced by Prograde Metabolism. This convenient capsule uses hot red pepper, caffeine, green tea, and cinnamon to provide you with healthy weight loss support. With so many places to be and so many things to do, eating on the go has become the norm. There are days when it feels nearly impossible to sit down and enjoy our three square meals, which is why travel-friendly foods are celebrating a heyday.
But even if you're trying to choose healthy options while buzzing from point A to point B, new research finds that eating on the go can lead to the consumption of more food. The Journal of Health Psychology released a study which found dieters who were instructed to eat a cereal bar while taking a walk were more likely to eat more than those given the same snack while watching TV or engaged in conversation. The study included 60 women, a mix of dieters and non-dieters, who were separated into three groups. One group was asked to walk, one watched an episode of Friends and the other chatted up a fellow participant, all the way consuming the cereal bar. Afterwards everyone filled out a survey and was presented with four bowls of snacks to munch on including M&Ms, carrot sticks, grapes and chips. In the end it was the dieters in the walking group who ate five times more candy than those not trying to lose weight. While the number of participants was small and the fact that it was conducted in a lab may have altered some behaviors, lead author professor Jane Ogden of the University of Surrey surmised this: "Eating on the go may make dieters overeat later in the day." But she advises that it's not just walking while eating that can make one eat more, it's really any sort of distraction. "Even though walking had the most impact, any form of distraction, including eating at our desks can lead to weight gain," said Ogden. "When we don't fully concentrate on our meals and the process of taking in food, we fall into a trap of mindless eating where we don't track or recognize the food that has just been consumed." Unexplained Weight LossThe National Institutes of Health suggests contacting a medical professional, if you have lost more than 5% of your normal body weight over 6 - 12 months or less, and the weight loss cannot be explained.
To remain fit and healthy is every individual's desire. In this quest, people undertake many measures like eating right, working out, playing a sport, etc. Losing weight due to regular exercise or following a healthy diet is normal, but losing weight without doing either, is a cause of concern. Sudden weight loss occurring in a short period of time can be an underlying symptom of various health issuesphysical as well as mentaland should be brought to the notice of a doctor immediately. Various health issues like Addison's disease, cancer, celiac disease, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), Crohn's disease, dementia, depression, diabetes, eating disorders, HIV/AIDS, hypercalcemia, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), narcotics, Parkinson's disease, peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis etc., may cause unexpected weight loss. Underlying Reasons Behind Sudden Weight Loss Addison's Disease This condition is also known as chronic adrenal insufficiency. This disorder occurs when hormones like aldosterone and cortisol are produced in insufficient quantities by the adrenal glands. This medical condition can be life-threatening if neglected. Sudden weight loss is one of the symptoms of Addison's disease. Cancer Sudden loss of weight is a common symptom observed in individuals with cancer. This happens because the cancerous tumors present in the body increase the body's metabolism, due of which the body is able to burn calories faster, thus leading to excess weight loss. Some people may also experience an unexplained weight loss while undergoing treatment for cancer. Celiac Disease In this digestive condition, the lining of the small intestine gets damaged due to an adverse reaction to gluten. This condition is characterized by an inability to absorb certain nutrients. Weight loss occurs due to malabsorption of vital nutrients, followed by other complications that affect the liver, kidneys, peripheral nervous system and brain. Chronic Diarrhea Diarrhea is caused when one consumes the wrong type of food or catches a viral infection called gastroenteritis. It is something that most people have experienced at some point in their life. Though such type of diarrhea can be treated with antibiotics, people who suffer from diarrhea for more than four weeks are said to have chronic diarrhea. When an individual has diarrhea for more than four weeks, weight loss is most likely to occur. COPD A group of lung diseases that block the airflow, leading to breathing difficult, are known as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). This condition comprises emphysema (air sacks at the smallest air passages in the lungs are destroyed) and chronic bronchitis (the lining of the bronchial tubes are inflamed). In later stages of COPD, unintended weight loss is observed. Crohn's Disease Crohn's disease is a rare disease that affects different areas of the digestive tract, causing inflammation of the tract lining. It leads to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, and in some cases malnutrition. It is a painful and debilitating disease that may be life-threatening, if not diagnosed and treated on time. Dementia Dementia is not really a disease, but is a group of symptoms relating to certain diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or Huntington's disease. It involves the loss of brain function, causing loss of memory, feeling confused, slurred speech, etc. Weight loss due to dementia is rare, but not unheard of. It persists in severe cases, when the patient has no memory if he/she has eaten food or not. Depression A mental condition that is characterized by the persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest is known as depression. Among the various symptoms of depression, the most primary one is the weight loss due to lack of appetite, or even excessive weight gain due to overeating. Diabetes Diabetes is a disease characterized by elevated blood sugar level. Usually, if the sugar level goes higher than normal, the most common symptoms are excessive thirst, and unexplained weight loss. This is because, the excess sugar does not get absorbed by the kidneys, and as a result of which, it is passed in the urine. Every time sugar is passed in the urine, the diabetic feels thirsty, and tries to quench it with water, sodas, coffee, etc. This, in turn, makes the sugar levels rise and thus, the cycle goes on. This cycle is what causes the sudden weight loss in diabetics. Eating Disorders An eating disorder due to which people obsess about what they eat and how much they weigh, is called anorexia nervosa. Usually, people with anorexia nervosa, starve themselves, or indulge in excessive exercising. On the other hand, bulimia nervosa is when an individual restricts the intake of food, by vomiting after eating, consuming large amounts of laxatives or diuretics, and exercising excessively to lose weight. Both these eating disorders should be treated quickly as these can turn life-threatening, especially anorexia, which is very common among teenage girls. People usually do this so that they can cope with emotional problems, as anorexia and bulimia are more mental conditions rather than physical ones. HIV/AIDS A chronic and life-threatening condition caused due to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is known as AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). HIV interferes with the body's resistance towards diseases and infections by damaging the immune system. There are many other diseases which cause sudden loss of weight that accompany HIV or AIDS (as the immune system is already depleted, the body is like an open playground for various diseases), like tuberculosis (TB), salmonellosis, cytomegalovirus (CMV), candidiasis, toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, cancer, wasting syndrome, and kidney disease. Hypercalcemia High calcium levels in the blood is known as hypercalcemia. Calcium is required for the maintaining bone density, contracting muscles, ensuring proper functioning of the brain and nerves, and also releasing hormones. When the parathyroid glands (glands that regulate blood calcium level) are overactive, it leads to hypercalcemia. This condition can go undetected, for years, if it is not in a very advanced stage, as the signs and symptoms are not severe. Although, in later stages, loss of appetite, excessive thirst, constipation, are some of the symptoms. Sudden loss of weight occurs in those who have hypercalcemia, due to the loss of appetite. Hyperthyroidism The excessive production of the hormone thyroxine, by the thyroid gland, is known as hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid. Sudden weight loss, sweating, nervousness, irritability, and rapid or irregular heartbeat, are caused due to the acceleration of the body's metabolism because of hyperthyroidism. Narcotics Consuming narcotics like cocaine, heroine, amphetamines, etc., suppresses the appetite, causing weight loss. Stimulant and drug abusers often go on binges to soothe their cravings for drugs, wherein they avoid eating or sleeping for days at a time. This unhealthy lifestyle choice leads to various health problems and even possible death. Parkinson's Disease Parkinson's disease is a condition that affects the nervous system of the body, caused due to the dopamine-generating cells in the substantia nigra, a region of the midbrain. It is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, for which a cure has still not been found. Some of the symptoms of this medical condition are, stiffness in limbs, restriction in movement, slurred and soft speech, decreased ability to perform involuntary movements like blinking, smiling, swing the arms while walking, etc.; uncontrolled body movements like tremors and shaking of limbs, slowed movements, changes in handwriting, impaired posture and also balance problems. Sudden weight loss due to the uncontrolled tremors and loss of appetite is common with people who have Parkinson's disease. Peptic Ulcer Open sores that develop on the inner lining of the esophagus, stomach and upper portion of the small intestine are called peptic ulcers. They are caused due to prolonged consumption of certain medication or bacterial infection. The most common symptoms of peptic ulcers are vomiting blood (red- or black-colored), unexpected weight loss, appetite changes, and dark blood in stools. Ulcerative Colitis Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition that causes long-lasting inflammation in certain areas of the digestive tract. It is an inflammatory bowel disease which usually affects the innermost lining of the large intestine and rectum. The symptoms of this condition include, rectal bleeding, rectal pain, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain, and an inability to move the bowels, in spite of the urge to do so, and unintended weight loss. It is also fairly normal to experience weight loss after you recover from an illness, or stress of bereavement, changing jobs, or a divorce. However, if the unexpected weight loss was not due to any of these causes, then it should not be overlooked and should be reported to your medical healthcare professional immediately. Crickets have almost as much protein as ground beef -- they are quicker to raise than cattle (taking just six weeks, and require much less land and water) - and thus a possible answer to mankind's future food needs is a grain-free, high-protein baking flour from ground-up crickets.
Bitty, a San Francisco-based company, produces cricket baking powder, and provided the following cookie recipes. Holiday Spice Cookies Makes: 1-2 dozen cookies Delightfully spicy and perfect for the holiday season, these cookies pack a sweet punch that pairs perfectly with apple cider or the festive holiday beverage of your choice. Ingredients: 3/4 cup cricket flour 12 cup almond flour 13 cup tapioca starch 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 12 teaspoon salt 13 cup brown or turbinado sugar 3 tablespoons organic cane sugar 1 teaspoon garam masala (you can find this in most spice aisles and certainly all Indian grocers, but feel free to substitute equal parts cinnamon and dried ginger if your grocer doesn't have it) 1 tablespoons vanilla 3 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon molasses 14 cup melted coconut oil Preparation: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. Add the dry ingredients into a stand mixer with the paddle attachment (a bowl and a spatula will also do well if you don't have one) and mix until evenly distributed. Add your wet ingredients and mix until things are sticking together -- you'll know it's the right consistency if you can pinch a small bit together and it stays. If it doesn't, feel free to add 1t of honey to get it there. Roll your dough into a log using plastic wrap. Form a log about 2" in diameter. Chill this log in the freezer for at least an hour, until firm enough to slice into 1/8-1/4" disks. Place the disks on a cookie sheet about 1" apart and dock with a fork. Bake for 12-15 minutes at 325 degrees. Chocolate Chip Cookies Makes: About 12 cookies A healthier take on the classic chocolate chip cookie, made with wholesome fats and gluten and grain-free, high-protein Bitty cricket flour. Ingredients: 2 cups Bitty cricket flour baking blend 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted 1/2 cup coconut sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 egg 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips Preparation: Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees. Combine flour, salt and baking soda in a mixing bowl and whisk to blend. In a stand mixer or separate bowl, beat together coconut oil and sugar. Add egg and vanilla and continue to mix. Gradually add dry mixture until thoroughly blended. Finally stir in chocolate chips. Refrigerate for 15 minutes so that mixture firms up slightly. On baking sheet covered with parchment paper, form cookie dough into 1/2-inch balls. Bake cookies for 15 minutes. Enjoy! For more info: 2014 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved. Restaurants, pubs, and eateries, and any business that serves food and beverages, are always tricky places to do accounting. There are many reasons why food and beverages are difficult to track: they are consumable, food and beverages can spoil, and orders can be returned to the kitchen by customers. Food and beverage accounting principles can help to prevent financial losses for your establishment. If you follow these simple pieces of advice your business can improve its accounting, and hopefully increase profits.
Conduct Menu Engineering Before you open your establishment or consider introducing a new menu item, you should conduct some menu engineering. This involves analyzing how many meals a certain amount of food can make, and determining the price that a customer will pay for an item. Menu engineering also determines an items popularity, and therefore, its profitability. This is the start of quantifying and controlling food and beverage for accounting purposes. Use Standardized Recipes The use of standardized recipes that are followed by everyone in the kitchen is the next step in food and beverage accounting. You need to make sure that your food inventory will make a certain number of meals, and your beverages are poured to a common standard. All employees should be trained to follow these guidelines. When they dont, your business is losing money and profit. Track Sales Carefully All of your staff that deals with ringing in meals, customer payments, and cashing out cash registers should be trained to do so properly and diligently. Proper training can prevent many errors at the till that can throw off inventory and skew your accounting numbers. Make sure that everyone is well versed in how to use the register and your food and beverage accounting will be so much simpler. Strict Purchasing Guidelines Everyone in your establishment should be aware of and adhere to strict purchasing guidelines in order to establish effective food and beverage accounting. There should be one person designated to make purchases for the business, and he or she should be informed of inventory counts so that he or she can place orders. This prevents over ordering and food spoilage, which cause eateries a lot of money! Prevent this by putting a procedure in place before ordering and purchasing becomes an issue for you. Have Effective Inventory Management Effective inventory practices are essential to proper food and beverage accounting. You should create inventory sheets and an inventory policy that guides employees as to how often they should conduct inventories, and how they should be conducted. Inventories can aid with ordering the necessary amount of supplies, and also with determining if standardized recipes are being followed. Food and beverage accounting is essential to the success of any eatery. You need to do menu engineering to determine the profitability and costs of individual items, and you need strict recipe inventory and purchasing guidelines to make sure food orders are being used to their full potential. If you own a restaurant, pub, or bar, its extremely important that you implement the suggestions detailed above to improve your food and beverage accounting practices. By: Nick P.
